Hundreds of thousands are suffering in the wake of the Myanmar Cyclone
Your donation will bring them help, care & hope.
At around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday May 3 2008 Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar (Burma), sending winds of up to 190 km per hour crashing through the country destroying homes, causing injury, uprooting trees, and claiming lives. Leaving an estimated over 22,000 people dead and more than 41,000 missing. Huge areas remain under water, particularly in the southern Irrawaddy delta.
Death toll could exceed 100,000 as Plan stresses large-scale, long-term relief effort in Myanmar
Details continue to emerge about the destruction across Myanmar (formerly Burma) after cyclone Nargis struck on May 3, 2008. Nearly one week later, details remain hazy. Reports emerging from Myanmar that the number of dead may exceed 100,000 due to the scarcity of safe food and clean water.
Cyclone victims face 'long-term' food shortages
One thing is clear – the need for large-scale, long-term rebuilding will be great. That most rice fields have been destroyed, which will hinder food supplies and livelihoods for thousands.
The aftermath
Schools have been left in ruins. Some of those still standing are being used as temporary shelters since many houses have been completely washed away.
After nearly a week of contaminated water and food supplies, waterborne disease is becoming an issue for the children and families in Myanmar, with children at particular risk.
Many areas of the country are completely cut-off and five regions with a combined population of 24 million have been declared disaster zones. Survivors in the worst-hit area of Irrawaddy Delta are facing the risk of widespread disease and hunger.
International aid is only now beginning to get through and shipments are currently being prepared by international agencies and national governments.
Qaaf aid
A QA emergency response team is being prepared to fly out to Myanmar at the earliest opportunity. Contact is being made with potential partners on the ground and we need URGENT HELP TO RAISE £200000 to cover: plastic, tents, water purification tablets, water filters, hygiene kits, medicines, mosquito nets and food. Help us to help the people of Myanmar.
Short-term relief is crucial at this time. QA will provide immediate emergency response to help children and their families in Myanmar and other areas. This will include -food items and others such as mosquito nets, shelters, and hygiene kits, especially for young girls. Medical supplies including anti-diarrhoea, anti-bacterial and anti-malarial drugs, as well as saline drips and basic bandaging and dressings will be distributed to aid in the prevention of water-borne diseases. Your help and support urgently needed.

ICYE-UK is particularly keen to recruit volunteers for projects in Brazil, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nepal. You could work with a social or environmental NGO and these projects range from working with disabled children and those living on the street, to helping to establish human rights and protecting natural reserves in Costa Rica. In Brazil, volunteers can work with deaf children and adolescents from poor communities within Porto Allegre. Their duties involve helping with activities such as arts, music workshops and English classes. In Costa Rica volunteers have the opportunity to work for environmental projects which help promote conservation, rural development and sustainable tourism. Volunteers can assist with reforestation, rural development and environmental education, so as to educate those in the surrounding communities about their local environment.

ICYE-UK can help you to find a project to suit your interests. Projects run for 6 months or 12 months. The cost of a 12 month placement is £3900 and the cost of a 6 month placement is £3300. These costs include return flights, accommodation, food, health insurance, pre-departure and on-arrival training, language lessons, visa support and monthly pocket money. ICYE provides full support with the volunteer's fundraising activities. We are also able to offer one volunteer £1000 towards the cost of their 6 or 12 month placement in Brazil.

No previous experience is necessary; we are just looking for enthusiastic individuals who want to experience something new and exciting.

Tel:020 7681 0983 Web: www.icye.org.uk E-mail: international@icye.org.uk

ICYE-UK is part of an international volunteering network and is a registered charity. A participation fee applies and we will support you in fundraising for this cost.

Greatpinoy for charities.

Milton Players Drama Group is a newly formed group in South Yorkshire who's aims are set high. We aim to help children and adults who have nothing to do, the chance to be able to act, dance sing and improve their drama skills on stage in front of public. In turn you will learn skills that are important to you for future, and identify trust, understanding, commitment and many more skills attached to our group.

Our aims are to raise money from ticket sales, from shows that we produce on stage, and to which all profits are donated to charity, to which at the present time is the Children's hospital in Sheffield.

At the present time we are in the middle of rehearsals for the Wizard of Oz, and are currently looking for more members, especially children to fill the parts of Munchkins. All we ask is that you are over the age of 5 and have the ability to be able to listen to instruction and perform to a standard that would be exceptable to the members of the public, due to supporting an important charity.

We are also looking for people to help backstage for impotant scene changes, and to help on the nights we perform to sell programs and run the raffle.

If you think you can help then please get in touch with us,and ask for Dean as we are running out of time. If you think you can help and want to get involved in this venture, then please contact myself or any of my staff on the following number 0844 884 9902 and we will be more than happy to answer any questions or send out an information pack or you.

We look forward to hearing from you and enrolling you in our venture.

VOLUNTEER IN ROMANIA, BULGARIA, BELARUS, and INDIA WITH YOUNG PEOPLE WHO NEED A FRIEND!!

SPECIALIST VOLUNTEERS ALSO NEEDED!

CAST was created in November 2003 in order to support the work of a Manchester based charity in Romania. In 2005, our work extended to projects in India. Over the years, we have been lucky enough to accumulate support from Medlink and The Workshop, Unilever Plc., The University of Manchester, and The University of Dundee. We have grown and developed over the years and although our core ethos hasn’t changed, we now strive to support projects all over the world (including the UK). We are a part of the not for profit Community Interest Company Life Improvement For Everyone (L.I.F.E.). We support charities, youth groups, and independent out-reach programmes which aim to improve peoples' lives. We work with both young volunteers and specialist volunteers largely involved with the health, education, and social care sectors in the UK to improve the quality of life for many children and young adults. CAST has become the channel through which much humanitarian aid has reached projects in Romania and India through the Romania Appeal, India Appeal, Intensive Interaction Outreach Programme, training seminars, summer medical clinics, and fundraising from all the volunteers who are involved. We have helped charities build long-term projects such as a children’s home and a Respite Care Home, which stabilize the futures of the children and young adults we aim to support. We aim to support other charities with similar works in the future.

CAST is quite unique as its primary driving force has always been a dedicated community of students who are primarily based in the health sector. We are motivated by our love for the many amazing children we know! As students within our chosen professions and young people, we have the potential to influence the future of our disciplines as well as improve the future for other young people living in harmful environments. We are making a difference to children and other young people who currently have to endure a troubled life. By giving them a voice and support, we can start building a brighter future for them.

If you would like to help us help the children we work for, get in touch!

Music For Africa - Charity Registration No 1102129

Our mission is to bring music in to the every day lives of young people in South Africa. We aim to provide young people with life enhancing access to music, particularly those in marginalized and subsistence level communities who otherwise would have no such opportunities, as a result of the apartheid era.

We inspire a love of music embracing classical, modern rock and traditional ethnic music. In so doing we raise skill levels, self-esteem, motivation, career and employment prospects. We empower and enable people across the community through music, ensuring skills are embedded to deliver long-term impact through sustainable provision.

3,500 Mile Sponsored Walk For Multiple Sclerosis Research

This summer Andrew Monk will continue his battle against one of the most insidious enemies of the present day - Multiple Sclerosis, a progressive degenerative neurological disorder, for which, at present, there is no cure, with a 3,500 mile sponsored walk to every main newspaper office and radio station in mainland England.

To sponsor Andrew on his mammoth walk, go to www.aboutms.co.uk

Andrew has witnessed the devastating effects of MS on his wife Gwen who, fifteen years ago at the age of 32, was stricken by this disorder. He has watched a fit, healthy, young woman gradually being forced to come to terms with a fearfully debilitating illness.

Whilst there are many worthy organisations providing help and advice to people with MS, Andrew plans to raise money for pure research into finding the cause and subsequently a cure. For this reason he has chosen the Myelin Project and The Accelerated Cure Project, both registered charities, as beneficiaries of the funds raised by his walk.

The research fund has already taken off with contributions and pledges from various sources – business, contemporary authors, TV personalities, and friends and family. Donations so far include a self portrait drawn and signed by Phil Collins, a tour of the Aston Martin factory, a Team McLaren cap autographed by Lewis Hamilton, signed photo and signed copies of two Tom Clancy books, signed photos from Sting, Michael Palin, Kenneth Branagh, and Abbey Clancy.

I am a project worker for a local charity, i want to find people who will be interested in building a friendship with someone in their community.

Many people do not have the luxury of having close friends or someone to support them when times are difficult, citizen advocacy attempts to change this by providing a personal relationship with someone who can support and provide guidance in times of need. There are many people in Edinburgh that have no one in their life, are isolated from society and the only people they interact with are paid staff. We are trying to help this by recruiting responsible members of the public to become citizen advocates. We then match them with people who are labelled as having a learning disability and have issues going on in their live that they need support with.

Is this something you would be interested in?

Macmillan Cancer Support is looking for people in the Guildford area who are interested in joining a local Macmillan group to help raise £20,000 by 2010 for new cancer services in Surrey by organising a few fun events each year to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

We are seeking enthusiastic members with fun ideas. There are no expectations of a high level of commitment and planning meetings are likely to take place three of four times a year. The Macmillan Surrey Fundraising Team will be here to support the group all the way, providing support for events and to ensure fundraising is easy, fun and stress-free.

Each year there are nearly 5000 people in Surrey who are told they have cancer. The Guildford group will help us achieve our ambition of reaching everyone affected by cancer by 2010, by helping to spread the word about the ways in which we can help and by raising vital funds to enable us to continue to provide practical, medical, emotional and financial support for local people whose lives are affected by cancer.

If you or anyone you know is interested in getting involved or looking to find out more information, please contact the Macmillan Surrey Fundraising Team on 01252 714818 or email surrey@macmillan.org.uk.

You love music. So do we. If you want to use your talent, time or mildly embarrassing obsession with music to make the world a better place, then keep reading…

Here at Oxfam we're looking for pro-active, outgoing music-lovers to become volunteer Music Event Organisers for Oxjam Music Festival 2008.

Oxjam is a music festival with a difference. Your event, in your town, adding together with other Oxjam events across the UK, makes one huge party. You choose the tunes. Any kind. From classical to club nights, folk to funk – you just have to have the drive to make it happen this April.

Ed and the rest of the Oxjam team will support you all the way, with face-to-face training and phone support.

For you it means gaining valuable experience, meeting new people and getting more involved in your local music scene.

For us it means the world. The money you raise goes towards our work to end poverty.

For more information, visit www.oxfam.org.uk/oxjam

To make sure you get there in time for training – sign up before 1st March.

Divine youth club runs a saturday after school youth play centre and holiday play group for young people in london.

In order to reach as many young people as possible, we need volunteers who love driving and to help us pick up & drop off the young people on satuday.

Drivers work with a navigator who directs them around the households.

A sense of calm and the flexibility to deal with roadworks and unexpected diversions are useful.

If you can help us, please contact youth worker leader 07786643016 email divineyouthclub@hotmail.co.uk

*Raise £100 or more for local charities

The experience starts by getting you strapped tightly into the bungee harness.

Next you will be taken 170ft into the air by a mobile crane, and with a few words of encouragement you will step to the edge of the platform.

To say that you will be excited is the understatement of the century.

You will then hear 3.2.1. BUNGEE! The rush you feel as you hurtle towards the ground will leave you breathless.

Face NI Inclusion Matters

Wanted:
Young, Fit and Active
VOLUNTEERS

The Young, Fit and Active programme targets young people with and without a disability who are currently often excluded from opportunities to engage in physical activity. Young people with a disability experience a lack of provision and difficulties in identifying and accessing such opportunities, and there is no real encouragement for this target group to engage in any programs.

There is also a distinct lack of trained professionals who can deliver inclusive physical activity programmes. Our project will therefore create new training opportunities for key people such as youth and community workers and volunteers, based on a solid understanding of disability issues.

This project gives enthusiastic volunteers the opportunity to gain new skills and qualifications around Inclusive Activities.

You will be trained in 3 core areas: Child Protection, Disability Awareness and Sports for All, followed by a chance to gain an Inclusive Activity qualification of your choice.

All we ask in return is that you, the volunteer, give 10 X 3 hr sessions of your new Inclusive Activity program back to the young people in your community.

Roadshows 'A bit of Spirit and a lot of Spit' a collection of prose and poetry aimed at those of us like myself who have suffered the sudden and unexpected bereavement of a loved one.

I am an International Psychic and Healer, my son passed away 28yrs ago at the tender age of 5 months, he 'told' me a couple of weeks before he passed that he was going to 'have to leave me', one of my poems describes the trauma and sheer horror of the experience.

Because society as a whole finds it hard to know how to deal with such trauma and time after time over the years i have been asked how did i get 'through it' I have put together these roadshows in an attempt to reach out to those unfortunates out there who have never really dealt with their feelings around their loss.

The roadshows will be full of laughter as well as tears and if the venues are donated free of charge it will enable me to donate 100% of the door money to the Charity.

Thank you in advance....Anna
